One of my favorite jewelry-making techniques is creating splat designs. It’s a fun and unconventional way to fabricate jewelry that produces completely unique results every time.

Instead of cutting, shaping, and texturing sheet metal, this technique begins by melting silver scraps and transforming them into organic, freeform shapes. No two splats are ever exactly alike, making each piece of handmade jewelry one of a kind.

How Splat Jewelry Is Made

To create these designs, I place small pieces of silver scrap onto a charcoal block. Using a butane torch, I heat the silver until it completely melts.

Once the silver is molten, I quickly position a second charcoal block over the first, pause for just a moment, and firmly press the blocks together. This creates the distinctive “splat” effect, producing a variety of interesting silver shapes and textures.

Every splat is unique, making each finished piece one of a kind.

Turning Splats into Jewelry

The finished silver splats can be incorporated into jewelry in many different ways.

In the first example below, I used several larger splatted silver pieces and soldered them together to create a bold pair of earrings.

This second design features many smaller splats soldered onto a silver backing, creating additional texture and dimension while showcasing the unique shapes formed during the splatting process.

Each approach creates a completely different look using the same basic technique.

Beyond Earrings

While splat designs make eye-catching earrings, the technique works just as well for pendants, bracelets, and cuff designs. You can even mix and match coordinating pieces to create a complete jewelry set.

One of the best parts of this process is embracing the asymmetry. Every splat has its own personality, giving each finished piece an organic, handcrafted feel that’s impossible to reproduce exactly.
